Helping Dementia Care Teams Build Something That Lasts
When a Dementia Care Hub in Hampshire wanted to introduce drumming and movement across its services, the aim was not simply to arrange a one-off activity. The organisation wanted its own staff to have the confidence and practical skills to deliver sessions regularly.
Drums4Health founder Tamsin Ward travelled to Hampshire to train 16 members of staff from three Hub locations during a practical training day.
None of the 16 participants had previous experience delivering this type of drumming programme. During the day, they explored rhythm, movement, warm-ups and cool-downs, practical facilitation and the evidence behind the approach. Working in small groups, staff then planned and delivered their own mini sessions.
By the end of the training, every group had successfully delivered a session.
The result was a team equipped to continue providing drumming and movement activities for people living with dementia, carers, families and the wider community, adapting sessions to the people they already know and support.
Creating Joyful Movement Through School Drumming
Drums4Health school workshops show how music and movement can work together to engage pupils in a way that feels energetic, creative and inclusive.
During a school workshop in April 2026, Tamsin worked with a Year 5 cohort alongside children with additional needs. The sessions brought together rhythm, beat and physical movement, with activities that could be adapted to different levels of participation.
Feedback from the school’s SENDCO described the experience as a day of joyful movement, highlighting the combination of rhythm, beat and exercise and the positive response from the children.
Other school feedback has shown how this inclusive approach can help pupils take part in their own way. One teaching assistant described how a pupil with Down Syndrome joined in for a significant amount of the session and “absolutely loved it”.
With nearly 30 years of experience in education, including working as a music teacher and Director of Music, Tamsin brings an understanding of both musical learning and the realities of working with different pupils and abilities.
Turning Fitness Into Something People Look Forward To
Sometimes the success story is not one event. It is people choosing to come back week after week.
Drums4Health fitness drumming classes combine genuine drum patterns with movement and coordination, creating an experience that engages both body and mind. Participants do not need previous drumming experience and can adapt their level of movement to suit them.
The experiences shared by participants reveal some common themes. People describe leaving sessions feeling energised and happy, enjoying exercise that does not feel like conventional exercise and appreciating the freedom to work at their own pace.
Others talk about the combination of physical movement and the mental challenge of learning drum patterns, alongside the welcoming atmosphere created by making music and moving together.
It is this combination of rhythm, movement, learning and community that makes Drums4Health different from simply exercising along to music.
Building Trust Through Community, Care And Connection
The impact of Drums4Health is also reflected in the growing community around the business.
Drums4Health has now received more than 50 Google reviews, with feedback from people who have experienced sessions in different settings. Reviews and participation have included people connected with organisations such as Theatre Royal Plymouth, alongside feedback from a local mayor.
The Drums4Health approach has also attracted wider interest for its focus on rhythm, movement, brain health and connection. Tamsin’s work has been featured by the National Activity Providers Association (NAPA), which supports activity and engagement within care settings.
These experiences help Drums4Health continue developing programmes that bring together musical learning, physical activity, wellbeing and human connection.
