More Than Just Exercise
Drums4Health exists to move the body, wake up the brain and help people feel connected. Our vision is a future where people of all ages can live longer, healthier lives through accessible, rhythm-based movement that supports physical wellbeing, brain health and community connection.
Unlike typical cardio drumming setups which use exercise balls and buckets, we use purpose built drums with beautiful tone and structure, which are designed specifically for fitness. Combining rhythm and movement, our sessions help improve cardiovascular health, build endurance, burn calories and support neuroplasticity (drumming drives neuroplasticity by synchronising both hemispheres through rhythm, timing, and motor control)…..all while learning drumming skills!
Social & Fun Session
Founded by a former head and director of music in schools, Drums4health draws on a deep understanding of both rhythm and people. Every participant gets their own sticks, and we also can provide home practice videos for those who want to keep going between sessions. It’s more than a workout, it’s a community, and we often continue the good vibes outside the classes with social events!

The Science of Drumming and the Brain
Research from the University of Oxford has uncovered fascinating insights into the link between drumming and the human brain. Far beyond being just a musical activity, drumming has been shown to influence cognitive function, emotional health, and social bonding. Combining this with exercise further enhances the benefits.
Key Findings
1. Cognitive Enhancement
• Drumming improves inhibitory control, action monitoring, and self-regulation.
• These skills are vital for focus, decision-making, and learning.
2. Emotional Regulation
• Playing drums can trigger the release of endorphins, leading to feelings of well-being, relaxation, and even euphoria.
3. Social Bonding
• The rhythmic, cooperative nature of drumming strengthens group connection.
• Evidence suggests it played an important role in early human communities and tribal bonding.
4. Brain Plasticity
• Learning to drum stimulates both structural and functional changes in the brain.
• This highlights the brain’s remarkable ability to adapt and reorganise.
5. Specific Brain Regions
• Research (including NIH studies) shows drumming increases functional connectivity in areas linked to emotion and cognition, such as the:
o Right inferior frontal gyrus
o Right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex
The Takeaway
Drumming is far more than rhythm and beats. It’s a powerful tool that can:
• Enhance cognitive performance
• Boost emotional well-being
• Strengthen social connections
In short, drumming positively impacts both the mind and body, making it one of the most accessible and enjoyable ways to support mental and emotional health.
