Welcome to Drums4Health!

Drums4Health has been selected as a finalist for Start-Up business 2025 with Devon Women in Business.

More Than Just Exercise

Here at Drums4health, we bring people together through the energising power of cardio drumming, which is a low impact, rhythm-based workout that’s as fun as it is effective! Unlike typical cardio drumming setups using buckets or balls, we use purpose built European drums with beautiful tone and structure, which are designed specifically for fitness. Combining music and movement, our sessions help improve cardiovascular health, build endurance, and burn calories – all while learning new musical skills!

Drums4health is about more than just exercise. Our sessions are fun, social, and inclusive, creating welcoming spaces filled with laughter and friendships. No matter who you are or what you do, our sessions offer a joyful way to improve wellbeing and make new friends. We welcome all fitness levels and abilities, with seated options available for those with limited mobility.

Social & Fun Session

Founded by a former head and director of music in schools, Drums4health draws on a deep understanding of both rhythm and people. Every participant gets their own sticks, and we also can provide home practice videos for those who want to keep going between sessions. It’s more than a workout, it’s a community, and we often continue the good vibes outside the classes with social events!

The Science of Drumming and the Brain

Research from the University of Oxford has uncovered fascinating insights into the link between drumming and the human brain. Far beyond being just a musical activity, drumming has been shown to influence cognitive function, emotional health, and social bonding. Combining this with exercise further enhances the benefits.

Key Findings

1. Cognitive Enhancement
• Drumming improves inhibitory control, action monitoring, and self-regulation.
• These skills are vital for focus, decision-making, and learning.
2. Emotional Regulation
• Playing drums can trigger the release of endorphins, leading to feelings of well-being, relaxation, and even euphoria.
3. Social Bonding
• The rhythmic, cooperative nature of drumming strengthens group connection.
• Evidence suggests it played an important role in early human communities and tribal bonding.
4. Brain Plasticity
• Learning to drum stimulates both structural and functional changes in the brain.
• This highlights the brain’s remarkable ability to adapt and reorganise.
5. Specific Brain Regions
• Research (including NIH studies) shows drumming increases functional connectivity in areas linked to emotion and cognition, such as the:
o Right inferior frontal gyrus
o Right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex

The Takeaway

Drumming is far more than rhythm and beats. It’s a powerful tool that can:
• Enhance cognitive performance
• Boost emotional well-being
• Strengthen social connections
In short, drumming positively impacts both the mind and body, making it one of the most accessible and enjoyable ways to support mental and emotional health.

Reviews

Tamsin’s Cardio Drumming is an absolute tonic! Not only is it a fun, friendly and relaxed atmosphere, but it really does stretch the brain cells in terms of rhythm and coordination. That, coupled with the physical exertion (which you can adjust to your own body’s ability) is a perfect way of engaging the mind and the body for an hour of worthwhile fun.

Wasn’t sure what to expect but I can honestly say this is the most fun you will ever have exercising and it’s guaranteed that you will leave with a smile on your face. Give it a go! It’s addictive!

I have tried Pilates, Zumba, and KeepFit, but none of them compares to the fun of cardio drumming. It's all about exercising to great music, hitting the drum to forget the day's frustrations, and I always finish with a smile on my face.

I’m so happy I discovered Tamsin’s Drums4Health! I wasn’t sure I would be able to do it or keep up, let alone get the beats, but my fears were alleviated the moment I turned up. It is for all ages and I was made so welcome by Tamsin and the others there, and it really didn’t matter about my ability. But very soon, with Tamsin’s excellent teaching skills I’m improving with every session. Apart from fitness it is such a ‘feel good’ activity I can’t imagine ever missing a session now. So don’t hesitate to come along….it’s the best thing I’ve ever tried
