Supporting Dementia Communities with Drums4Health

At Drums4Health, we are proud to work with dementia support charities, memory cafés, community groups and care organisations to deliver joyful, inclusive movement sessions that bring people together through rhythm and music.

Drums4Health combines gentle physical activity, rhythm and social connection, creating a powerful and uplifting experience for people living with dementia, their carers and the volunteers who support them.

Shared Experiences

One of the most special aspects of these sessions is that they are truly shared experiences. People living with dementia and their loved ones can sit side by side, each with their own drum, enjoying the rhythm together. Participants often describe the sessions as energising and freeing — somewhere they can move, laugh, and even drum out frustrations in a safe and positive way.

During one session, a gentleman living with dementia turned and said simply:

“This is making me feel so good.”

Moments like these are why Drums4Health is so powerful.

A Truly Inclusive Activity

Drums4Health sessions are designed so that everyone can take part, regardless of ability, mobility or musical experience.

Participants can join in:

  • Seated in armchairs or wheelchairs
  • Standing if they wish
  • Moving gently to the rhythm
  • Watching and joining when they feel comfortable

The activity naturally encourages movement, coordination and engagement, but without pressure or expectation.

Sessions are also popular with both men and women, something that can be challenging when planning activities in dementia settings. Volunteers frequently join in alongside participants, creating a shared atmosphere of fun, laughter and connection.

Many organisations also find that participants begin replicating simple rhythms at home, extending the wellbeing benefits beyond the session itself.

Real Feedback from Dementia Groups

The response from dementia charities, carers and volunteers has been incredibly positive.

Participants and carers have shared feedback such as:

“An excellent drumming experience. It was different to normal activities.”

“Brilliant, absolutely lovely. People were really engaging with the drumming and wiggling their bodies.”

“It was amazing… great to see him getting into it and enjoying himself so much.”

“Everyone could join in regardless of their ability.”

“One of the best activities to date. You didn’t have to have rhythm to join in.”

Volunteers have also commented on the positive impact:

“It brought smiles to people’s faces who were clearly enjoying it.”

“I think one of the best sessions we’ve had.”

“It was really good fun and exercise.”

Evidence Supporting Rhythm, Movement and Brain Health

A growing body of research highlights the benefits of rhythm and music-based activities for brain health, mood and cognitive engagement.

Studies show that drumming and rhythm-based movement can:

  • Activate multiple areas of the brain simultaneously
  • Support coordination and cognitive engagement
  • Improve mood through the release of endorphins
  • Encourage social interaction and emotional connection

Occupational therapy perspectives also highlight how activities like drumming can help people living with dementia stay present in the moment, experience “flow”, and temporarily forget worries or frustrations.

One occupational therapist reflected after observing a session:

“Whilst drumming, people were living in the moment and loving life — fully engaged and in the flow. As a facilitator, I really felt that something special was happening in the room.”

Creating Moments of Joy and Connection

At its heart, Drums4Health is about creating moments of joy, movement and connection.

Through rhythm and shared experience, participants rediscover the pleasure of moving to music, connecting with others and simply enjoying the moment.

For dementia charities and organisations looking to introduce innovative, inclusive and evidence-informed activities, Drums4Health offers a powerful and sustainable solution.
